What Is AI Search Visibility and How Do You Measure It?

By Maximus Mediascape

TLDR

AI search visibility is how often your business appears in AI answers. No single free tool shows all of it, so combine Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Clarity, Analytics and a monthly manual check.

People are starting to use ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and other AI tools to research products, compare options and find businesses. For a business owner, that creates a simple question: can your customers actually find you there?

AI search visibility is harder to measure than a normal Google ranking, but it is not completely hidden.

With a few free tools and a simple monthly check, you can build a useful picture of where your business is appearing, which pages AI systems are using and whether that visibility is bringing people to your website.

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility describes how often your business, website, products or content appear in AI-generated search results and answers.

That visibility can take different forms.

Your website may appear in an AI-powered Google result. An AI assistant may cite one of your pages as a source. Your brand may be mentioned or recommended. Someone may then click through to your website and enquire, book or buy.

These are all useful signals, but they tell you different things.

A customer can see your business recommended inside an AI answer without ever visiting your website. So website traffic alone cannot show your full AI visibility.

How can you measure AI search visibility?

There is no single free dashboard that tells you everything.

The most useful approach is to combine a few tools because each answers a different business question.

Before anyone clicks

What AI shows people

  • Google Search ConsoleAre my pages appearing in Google's AI results?
  • Bing Webmaster ToolsIs my website being cited in AI answers?
  • Manual monthly checkAm I mentioned or recommended, and who appears instead?

Google Analytics cannot see this part, because nobody has reached your website yet.

The click
  • Microsoft ClarityAre AI systems citing my pages, and what do those visitors do next?

After they arrive

What visitors do

  • Google AnalyticsIs AI traffic leading to enquiries, bookings or sales?
Each tool answers a different question, depending on whether the person has clicked through to your website yet. Based on the tool descriptions in this article.

Google Search Console: Are your pages appearing in Google’s AI results?

Google Search Console is a useful starting point for understanding visibility inside Google’s own AI search experiences.

Its Generative AI performance report shows impressions from features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can see which pages appeared and break the data down by country, device and date.

For a business owner, the useful questions are straightforward.

Which product, service or information pages are appearing most often? Are impressions increasing month by month? Are important pages receiving little or no visibility?

Looking at these patterns over time is usually more useful than reacting to a single day’s numbers.

If you want to explore the report in more detail, read our guide to the Generative AI Performance Report in Google Search Console.

Bing Webmaster Tools: Is your website being cited in AI answers?

Bing Webmaster Tools is especially useful for understanding citations.

Its AI Performance report shows how often content from your site is cited across supported Microsoft AI experiences, which pages receive citations, the grounding queries linked to those citations and how citation activity changes over time.

It also provides additional context around topics, intent and citation share.

Imagine you run a home improvement business.

You may find that an article explaining the causes of roof leaks is regularly cited, while your waterproofing service page receives very little visibility.

That tells you something useful. AI systems already associate your website with a particular subject, but there may be gaps around the services you actually want customers to find.

It is also important to remember that a citation is not the same as a ranking. It simply means your content was used as a source in an AI-generated answer.

Microsoft Clarity: What do visitors actually do?

Microsoft Clarity is one of the more useful free tools because it helps you understand what happens after someone reaches your website.

Session recordings let you see how visitors move through a page. Heatmaps help you understand where people click and how far they scroll.

For an AI-referred visitor, you can get a clearer picture of what happened after the click.

Did they read the page?

Did they move to a product or service page?

Did they struggle with the navigation?

Did they reach an enquiry point?

Clarity also now includes AI Visibility reporting. Its citation dashboard can show page citations, AI referral traffic, grounding queries, cited pages and Share of Authority.

This makes Clarity useful for both sides of the question: are AI systems using your content, and what happens when AI sends visitors to your website?

Google Analytics: Is AI traffic leading to useful actions?

Google Analytics helps connect traffic sources with business results.

In Traffic acquisition, source and medium dimensions help you understand where sessions came from. You can then look at the pages those visitors reached, their engagement and the actions they completed.

For an online shop, that useful action might be a purchase.

For a service business, it could be an enquiry or form submission.

But there is an important limitation.

Google Analytics only sees people who actually reach your website. If someone sees your business recommended inside an AI answer but never clicks, that exposure will not appear in Analytics.

That is why AI referral traffic should be treated as one part of AI visibility, not the whole picture.

You can also check your AI visibility manually

Manual checks are still useful, especially when you want to see what potential customers might actually find when they ask AI for recommendations.

Once a month, choose a small set of questions that reflect how people in the UK might search for your products or services, then test them across platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

For example:

  • A mattress retailer might ask, “What type of mattress is best for lower back pain?”
  • A hotel might test, “Best family-friendly hotels in Cornwall.”
  • A blinds company could ask, “What are the best blinds for a south-facing bedroom?”
  • A local trades business might check, “Who offers reliable roof repair services in Manchester?”

Use the same core questions each month and note whether your business is mentioned, whether your website is cited, which competitors appear and whether the information shown about your company is accurate.

Keeping the questions consistent makes it easier to spot changes over time.

This will not give you a precise AI visibility score, but it can give you a useful benchmark and show whether your brand is becoming more visible for the searches that matter to your customers.

What should you do if your AI visibility is low?

Finding a visibility gap is only useful if you know what to work on next.

On your website

  • A clear explanation of what you offer, who it is for and where you operate
  • Logical structure and internal linking
  • Relevant schema markup
  • Guides that answer real customer questions
Consistent business information, on your site and on trusted profiles

Beyond your website

  • Genuine authority: reviews, profiles, publications and credible mentions
The six fixes in this section, split by where the work happens. Consistent information sits on the line because it has to match in both places.
  • Make your website easier to understand. Important pages should clearly explain what you offer, who it is for and where you operate.
  • Improve your website structure and internal linking. Products, services and supporting content should connect logically rather than sitting as isolated pages.
  • Use relevant schema markup. Structured data gives search engines clearer information about the meaning of a page. It does not guarantee AI visibility, but it can help machines understand your content and entities more clearly.
  • Answer real customer questions. Useful guides, comparisons and first-hand information give search and AI systems more relevant material to understand and reference. Read How to Build Content AI Actually Understands.
  • Keep important business information consistent. Your locations, services, products and company details should not conflict across your website and trusted third-party profiles.
  • Build genuine authority outside your website. Relevant reviews, industry profiles, publications and credible mentions can reinforce what your business is known for.

Make AI visibility part of your monthly reporting

You do not need to check everything every day.

Once a month, review Google Search Console for generative AI impressions, Bing Webmaster Tools for citations, Microsoft Clarity for AI referrals and visitor behaviour, Google Analytics for traffic and useful actions, and your manual checks for brand mentions and recommendations.

  1. MonSearch ConsoleGenerative AI impressions and the pages appearing
  2. TueBing Webmaster ToolsCitations and which pages receive them
  3. WedMicrosoft ClarityAI referrals and visitor behaviour
  4. ThuGoogle AnalyticsTraffic and useful actions
  5. FriManual checksMentions, recommendations and competitors
One way to spread the monthly review across a working week. This is our suggestion, not a rule: what matters is repeating the same checks.

Over time, compare the same signals rather than chasing a single visibility score.

The important part is getting the measurement set-up right. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Microsoft Clarity and Google Analytics all need to be properly connected and configured before the data becomes genuinely useful.

Measurement is only the first step. Your website structure, schema, content quality, technical set-up and wider brand signals all influence how easily search engines and AI systems can understand and use your information.
